Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway Upgrade: A New Era of Multi-Level Urban Mobility
Hyderabad is preparing for a significant transformation in its road and transport infrastructure
with the proposed double-decker elevated corridor along the Hyderabad–Vijayawada National
Highway. This project is designed to address one of the city’s most congested stretches and
improve connectivity toward the eastern regions.
Rather than being just another road project, this initiative introduces a multi-level transport
system, combining road and metro infrastructure into a single corridor. Here’s a clear and
structured look at what is planned and why it matters.
Project Overview
The proposed corridor will be developed between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar, covering a
distance of approximately 5.5 kilometers. It is one of the most ambitious urban transport
proposals currently under consideration in Hyderabad.
Key Highlights:

  • Total length: 5.5 km
  • Configuration: Eight-lane elevated corridor
  • Estimated cost: ₹941 crore
  • Objective: Reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on a busy national highway
This stretch is a critical entry and exit point for traffic moving between Hyderabad and
Vijayawada, making it a high-priority area for infrastructure upgrades.
    Three-Level Integrated Design
One of the most notable features of this project is its three-level structure, designed to
efficiently use limited urban space while supporting multiple modes of transport.
    Proposed Structure:
  • Ground Level: Service roads for local traffic
  • Middle Level: Main highway traffic (high-speed corridor)
  • Top Level: Metro rail line
This design allows for simultaneous movement of local, long-distance, and public transport,
reducing interference between different traffic types.
    Integration with Metro Rail
The inclusion of a metro rail line on the top level reflects a shift toward integrated urban
    transport planning.
    Why This Matters:
  • Encourages use of public transport
  • Reduces dependency on private vehicles
  • Helps manage long-term traffic growth
By combining road and metro systems, the project aims to create a balanced transport
ecosystem, rather than relying solely on road expansion.
    Expected Public Impact
The corridor is expected to benefit a large population in eastern Hyderabad.
    Estimated Reach:
  • 10–12 lakh residents
  • Covering 60–70 residential colonies
    Potential Benefits:
  • Reduced travel time during peak hours
  • Less traffic congestion on NH-65
  • Improved daily commute for working professionals
This is particularly important for areas that have seen rapid residential growth but still face
    infrastructure limitations.
    Funding and Approval Status
The project is currently under review by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and is
likely to be considered under the 2026–27 annual plan.
    Funding Breakdown:
  • Central Government: ₹741 crore
  • State Government + HMRL: ₹200 crore
Once approvals are granted, the project will move to the tendering and execution phase.
Additional Corridor: Madinaguda to BHEL Junction
In addition to the LB Nagar–Hayathnagar corridor, another double-decker project has been
    proposed.
    Project Details:
  • Length: 1.2 km
  • Lower level: Four-lane highway
  • Upper level: Two-lane metro rail
Special design considerations are being made near BHEL Junction to ensure compatibility with
    existing infrastructure.
    Ongoing NH-65 Expansion
Parallel to new proposals, work is already underway to improve existing road infrastructure.
    LB Nagar–Malkapur Stretch:
  • Project cost: ₹545 crore
  • Objective: Expand to six-lane highway
  • Progress: 80% completed
This indicates that the government is pursuing both short-term improvements and long-term
    solutions simultaneously.
    Wider Telangana Road Development Plan
The state is also implementing a broader road expansion strategy under the Hybrid Annuity
    Model (HAM) Phase-I.
    Key Highlights:
  • 441 projects across 34 packages
  • Total road length: 6,092 km
  • Estimated cost: ₹13,006 crore
Several project tenders are already under evaluation, showing steady progress in statewide
    infrastructure development.
    Why This Project Matters
  1. Addressing Urban Congestion
Hyderabad has experienced rapid growth, leading to increased traffic pressure. Multi-level
corridors help manage this without requiring additional land.
  2. Efficient Use of Space
With limited urban land available, vertical infrastructure (multi-level roads) provides a
    practical solution.
  3. Integrated Transport Planning
Combining metro and road systems in one corridor reflects a modern approach to city planning,
    reducing fragmentation in infrastructure.
  4. Supporting Future Growth
As the city expands toward its outskirts, improved connectivity will be essential for:
  • Residential development
  • Industrial growth
  • Economic activity
    Challenges to Consider
While the project offers several advantages, there are also challenges:
  • Execution complexity due to multi-level design
  • High construction cost and funding management
  • Coordination between agencies
  • Potential delays due to approvals and land constraints
Careful planning and monitoring will be required to ensure timely completion.
    Conclusion
    The proposed Hyderabad–Vijayawada double-decker corridor represents a forward-looking
approach to urban mobility. By combining road and metro infrastructure into a single, multilevel system, the project aims to tackle congestion while preparing the city for future growth.
    If implemented effectively, it can:
  • Improve travel efficiency
  • Support sustainable transport
  • Enhance overall urban connectivity
